Community Businesses and Volunteers at BFHP This Summer
Throughout this summer BFHP has seen many local businesses and volunteer individuals and groups stop by our administrative offices and our various service sites to lend a helping hand.
Bank-of-the-West-Grant-2010
On August 6th, Linda Rosslyn from the Bank of the West, Berkeley branch stopped by and gave Terrie Light, Executive Director, a grant for BFHP's Feeding Programs. In July the Piedmont group prepared and served hot dogs at the Men's Overnight Shelter while a Berkeley leadership group, The Young Scholars, led by Justin Martin learned about our programs and helped serve the evening meal to about 50 clients staying at the shelter. The clients had a wonderful meal and many volunteers to share it with.

Women's Friday Fun Wellness Night

Recently, our clients at the North County Women's Center expressed a desire to have workshops and activities that specifically address the enormous amount of stress in their lives. Based on this feedback, BFHP launched a Wellness Initiative as part of our Access to Health Care Program.  "Wellness" quickly attracted the attention of several of our community partners and is now a collaborative project that offers multiple activities each week.

Jewelry

The UC Berkeley Suitcase Clinic now hosts weekly wellness nights with the goal of providing a creative outlet for the women that in turn builds community, boosts self-confidence, and reduces stress. At their kick-off event, they hosted a jewelry-making activity, which quickly turned into a discussion about starting a small business.  Student Sarah Raybin comments, "It was such an amazing experience to spend time with the women and watch their interests, curiosity and sense of empowerment blossom through this beading fun night."  Since then, they have painted self-portraits and written personal narratives. The students also began a very popular weekly walking group to get women outside and active during the summer months.

Dr. Lori-Ann Gertonson, a wellness chiropractor, also visits NCWC weekly, providing chiropractic adjustments for our clients, and hosts a monthly wellness workshop on stress management techniques.  We are also in the process of organizing on-site yoga classes, parenting groups, and therapy sessions.

If you have a skill that you would like to offer to our wellness program, please get in touch with us!  We are looking for new or gently used yoga mats, beads and jewelry making supplies, journals, and other craft supplies.
